Brothers John and René Haket have always produced cucumbers. You could describe their company as ‘abnormally normal': no messing around, just good quality cucumbers. Being busy in the greenhouses is the aspect of their work they both enjoy the most. “I enjoy the freedom I have”, says John. “And a cucumber is a fantastic product to grow, it’s healthy and delicious."
The company runs on geothermal heat, and the brothers have had solar panels installed. The result is low electricity and gas consumption. In the greenhouse they’re liberal with their use of bugs and insects: natural predators that help to ensure a healthy crop. This way, they can minimise pesticide use. “It’s important that the whole crop stays healthy, as this guarantees the highest quality production.”
