Pome and stone fruit grower

Marco van Daele

It’s sometimes said that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. This was the case for Marco van Daele. His father was an arable farmer, but he liked their neighbour’s fruit farm more, and so started working there when he was young. He has been a self-employed fruit grower since 1987, initially growing only apples. Today, he grows pears, cherries and a small amount of apricots. Pears and cherries dominate, and cherries are also sold through the farm shop. As he is the only cherry grower in the polder area, he is well known for miles around.

Like most fruit growers, Marco enjoys working outdoors. His son likes to help out on and he is also supported by seasonal workers. “The most important thing is to be able to enjoy your work. I can definitely do this, as my work offers a great sense of freedom and I’m always out in the open air.” Their fruit continues to be successful. “We are extremely proud of how things are going." Marco aims to continue this positive trend for years to come.
